While the last minute touches were being set for the sound at Central Community Church, Jim Pearson (right) of Light 99 interviewed Geoff Moore. They discussed among other things, life without The Distance, the new solo CD, and the upcoming tour and chance to perform with his long-time writing collaborator, Steven Curtis Chapman. Afterwards, Jim went outside to visit with a few of the dozens of folks lined up for general admission seats.
Everyone was pretty excited to get in. Not including the book tour last June, this was the first time Steven had been to Wichita in a couple years. Many are saying the Speechless CD is his best in a long time. Right before the concert, those that won local radio contests and the tour contest got to "meet and greet" the guys - including some of the Better Book Room staff (l. to r.) Geoff, Shennea Wells, Steven, Christian Wisner, and John Overholt. Steven and Geoff visit with Heather Molden, of the Pregnancy Crisis Center of Wichita. Steven and Geoff gave Heather several items (t-shirts, hats, etc.) to donate for an auction held the next evening to benefit the PCC.
Heather told me the auction was a huge success! Here with Steven and Geoff are Heather (left) and her handsome sons (front row, l. to r.) Cameron, Robert, and Caleb. Before and during the concert events, there was a video camera hovering around taking shots to be used later by Nancy White (center) of the Family First organization as part of their presenting Steven a special award for his work in preventing youth violence. Finally it's time for the big event! Central Community was transformed by the very elaborate lights and staging. Very cool, without being overwhelming or distracting.
Steven had a great band for the concert. One unique thing for Steven this time is all the players on the tour are also the players on the Speechless recording. On keyboards is Chris Mosher, whose unknown Wichita connection was his playing on both Mitch McVicker's CD and the Canticle CD. On lead guitar is Randy Pearce. Randy has toured with Steven for quite a while now.
Adam Anders is on bass guitar... ...and Will Denton on drums rounds out the rhythm section. Will has also been to Wichita with DC Talk and Audio Adrenaline.
In addition to great music, Steven shared a wonderful witness. He also told us of the trials of traveling with a family back home. The band was very tight and the mix of the sound was excellent. They sure sounded a lot tighter than just the 5th date of the tour. It was a really good mix of old music, new music, stories, and of course - Geoff Moore. When Geoff came out to join Steven, it was just the two of them for a few songs.
Some folks are probably not aware how many songs Steven and Geoff have written together, and many of those are huge hits (check your liner notes). It was a rare treat for them to be able to share those songs together in concert. It was in fact the first time I'd ever seen them together in concert. It was very obvious these two have been long time friends and collaborators. There was lots of ribbing back and forth. (Like the comment that arm wrestling was the decision maker on who got to record a song after they co-wrote one.)
Steven sang his wonderful love song for his wife (and wedding favorite) "I Will Be Here," and then Geoff (after a funny story of how his wife teased him about there not being one for her) sang his song "written soon-after" for her, "If You Could See." After some praise songs, they took a short break, and the previously mentioned award was presented by Mark Merrill of Family First . The videos taken would be shown later at a special banquet in Florida. The Ambassador Award Steven received was given because of hisYouth Violence Prevention Program, Bullet Proof, which grew out of the senseless shooting deaths at Steven's alma mater Paducah High School a couple years ago.
I must say in all honesty, this concert easily tops the last one Steven brought to Wichita.
The concert lasted almost three hours and very few (except some with small kids) left early.
It's a must see concert when it comes to your area.

One last shot of those who really enjoyed the encore, "Dive."
