Did you catch The Tonight Show last night (Monday night)? If you did, did you catch Garth Brooks singing a song from his new Chris Gaines project? In case you haven't heard, Garth has a new project taking on a fictitious persona as Chris Gaines, a pop star, complete with a past history, previous released recordings, and a Myspace page and everything. Today (Sept 28th) he released the Greatist Hits of this so-called Chris Gaines, and will most likely go on tour, and all of this is supposedly in support of a yet-to-be-made feature length movie, "The Lamb."
For more info on this character, see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Gaines>.
Anyway, what does this have to do with Whiteheart? While visiting with Rick Florian last night, discussing the upcoming revamped Whiteheart Web Page and FAQ, and talking about some Whiteheart alumni, he clued me into the band that is backing and in fact writing most of the music for Chris Gaines. Check out this web page for the song lyrics (it is archived at web.archive.org from 2001). You'll notice that Whiteheart alumni are involved in the writing of every song but one. You can catch the band on TV several more times. Tomorrow night (Wed eve 9/29) being the big opportunity in an hour long prime-time TV special (NBC, 7:00pm Central Daylight Time). Here are some TV appearances noted on the Chris Gaines Fan Page. Almost two years ago (see news item 30 Nov 97), I announced some changes to the web page. Only a couple of those items have been updated. However, now to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the launching of this web page, I will post the revised Whiteheart Web Page. All the updates will be done (including the FAQ), and there will be a new location. The launch date of the updated page is October 16, 1999. I realize this info is way over-due, but there had been some complications at the record company. They have now been resolved and Scott at Thoughtscape Sounds has been assured that this info is much more reliable. The CD's that were reported (last year) to be re-released are now about to hit the mail - all except the "Hotline Limited Edition" CD. That CD is being replaced with an even cooler deal. See the list below. Some of you (and myself) received the regular "Hotline" CD this past spring. You will find the following info on Thoughtscape's Web Page, both in the regular "W" order section, and the New & Pre-Releases Section. The HotLine Limited Edition CD mentioned last year is being replaced with the following.... To Order, go to the Thoughtscape Sounds Order Page. *** ATTENTION *** If you ordered any of these last year (except of course for the "Hotline Limited Edition" or the new "Millenium Archives" CD, and have not cancelled your order - your order still stands and is valid. If you're not sure, contact Thoughtscape to find out. Here's a definite collector's item. Thoughtscape Sounds has informed me along with the CDs mentioned in last month's announcement (see news item 21 Oct 98) there will be released a very special Hotline - Limited Edition. Included with the songs of the original recording this release (which I'm told will most likely be a double CD) are four bonus tracks and an interview. The exact content is unknown, but it's rumored the bonus cuts are previously unreleased recordings. OK, so here's the deal. There is no price set yet on this CD which is due mid-December 1998 (possibly the 1st of the year), but it will be in the $30-$40 price range. Because of the limited status, hard-core collectors (like myself) should immediately contact Thoughtscape (http://www.thoughtscape.com/order.htm) to pre-order the CD or for questions. (For those who are wondering, Hotline - Limited Edition is in addition to the previously announced Hotline, not a replacement. They are both available.) I would be remiss if I didn't qualify these recent announcements. Long time Whiteheart fans are all too familiar with overabundance of re-released Whiteheart material, and the fact that the guys don't get a single dime. It's a simple matter of business. They no longer own that music, the record company does. I should also say this is not a unique situation for Whiteheart. Any artist who signs with a record company (for the most part), signs away the right to his music. My friend Kerry Livgren has the same problem only reversed. He would like to re-release older Kansas material on his own Numavox Records label, but he doesn't own it. Sony does. (Never-the-less he still has a lot of stuff he's working on.) I visited with Billy about this situation last week to confirm what we have discussed before. Though they are certainly not happy about this, they also understand that this is the only possible resource that Whiteheart fans have for this music, and understand that people will want to buy it. So if you have a problem with supporting this kind of venture, vote your conscience and don't buy 'em, but know that if you do buy 'em, Whiteheart understands. Let me also further qualify, Thoughtscape is not the perpetrator, just a vendor making these available. Now would also be a good time to revisit a letter Billy wrote in the April '96 CCM Feedback section about the subject of Whiteheart reissues inundating the market at that time (and of course, now again). Many are obviously concerned about the guys, and wondering if there is anything wrong, since there haven't been any posts or tour dates announced or anything. The guys are doing just great! That's why you haven't heard anything. Rick is happy and successful with his real estate gig, Mark is loving being a new daddy and writing songs, and Billy is extremely busy producing new acts and was recently named the new A & R Director for KMG-Nashville (that's Killen Music Group). I visited with Rick last week and he promised he would write another update letter soon, to give us a little better insight into what the future hold for Whiteheart. So, yes, that means still no new dates or recordings on the horizon, but the band doesn't want to call it quits, so they can leave it open for options in the future. Another question I've received, not just recently, but all the time, is "how could I get a hold of Whiteheart's earlier recordings?" Well, that's a little bit of good news. It seems that Home Sweet Home Records is once again making available some of those recordings, including the illusive Live At Six Flags. Here's the scoop... Contact Thoughtscape Sounds to order the following (which can be found on their new releases page at http://www.thoughtscape.com/wxyz.htm For complete order info, go to http://www.thoughtscape.com/order.htm, but the basics are as follows... When ordering for the first time, please, call the 800 number (below). After ordering the first time, you can use the email address: yourthoughts@thoughtscape.com. The Gospel Music Association 29th Annual Dove Awards air Thursday, April 23rd, 1998, at 8pm to 11pm EST on TNN. These changes are just a very small beginning. The best is yet to come, so stayed tuned. Changes coming up in the next few days and weeks include the addition of ... God Bless you all, and thank you for your patience and prayer support as I waded through the emotions of dealing with Rich Mullins death and that mailing list. This wild roller coaster began for me last Friday. I took off for Oklahoma City, and went to Mardel's to meet up with Rick, Billy, and Mark for that stop in their bookstore tour. It was so great to see them - they looked good, they sounded good, and they had a wonderful time with the crowd. I drove home listening to the pre-release CD, excited about getting started on re-doing the page. I got home about midnight and started working right away. Then came the phone call about 2am. Rich was dead - surely it was a mistake, but this was an extremely reliable source. I spent the next several hours in agony, until it was confirmed. The rest of this story you may already know. Let me tell you this. I have been unable to listen to Rich's music. It's just too painful. This new Redemption CD has carried me through this whole week, especially the song "Fall On Me". Next week I will begin work on this page, as well as the FAQ and a review of the release party, so please bear with me. Thanks in advance for your prayers. I will not be responding to personal email for while, as I can barely handle the load now. You will be able to "pre-purchase" the new CD "Redemption" and have it reserved for the Sept 23rd release day, as well as meeting the guys. I will be attending the Oklahoma City "party" this next Friday (9/19). See ya' there! Here is the songlist from "Redemption" (thanks to Brian Jarrett) ... Whiteheart Alumni Watch Last Tuesday evening (9/9), Tommy Sims appeared playing bass behind Amy Grant for her Jay Leno - Tonight Show appereance (coinciding with the release of her new "Behind The Eyes" CD. Later that same evening, on Conan, Brian Wooten (wearing his trademark Converse tennis shoes) was playing lead guitar for a new artist Neil Cody. In case you haven't picked Amy's newest yet, as well as Tommy's playing and co-writing a song, you'll find other Whiteheart alumni (no big surprise here) - Dann Huff, Gordon Kennedy, and Chris McHugh. I've completely overhauled the Whiteheart Page. In addition to various housekeeping duties and updating links, you will now notice toolbars on most pages that will make getting around on the Whiteheart Page much easier. The only page that has a major format change is the Information and Links Page, so that it's more organized (In addition to adding more links). Here's the current Whiteheart lineup (in addition to Mark Gersmehl (keyboards), Billy Smiley (guitar), Rick Florian (lead vocals) - As I understand it, this new rhythm section is temporary, possibly just through the end of September. Here's a letter from Whiteheart about the Whiteheart Alliance Fan Club and the status of the band. Please pray for them as they go through this transition. Billy Smiley told me, "we are doing very well, we have had some time off so we are ready to play beginning with Sonshine festival ... Jon Knox [on drums] is still with us through Sept. - so we're looking forward to a funfilled summer with some new blood in the band..." Please pray for the guys as they go through this transition period. As Rick would say, "Un-be-stinkin'-lieveable!" I about croaked when I read that. I'm not a letter-writer-complainer, but I'm not letting this one pass. I'm writing to CCM, and if you feel the same way I do, here's their address: Feedback CCM The single "Inside" should be shipped and marketed to mainstream AOR (Album Oriented Rock) within the next week or two. The video for "Inside" will simultaneously be shipped to about 170 mainstream video outlets including MTV and VH-1. Please pray that God would use this potential for His greatest good. We are excited however things turn out that the opportunity exists that those who need to hear the message the most will get the chance. Hope all is well in your lives. God is worthy of our all. --Whiteheart

'Best Of' Albums...Ad Infinitum?
As an artist, I want readers to know that 90 percent of the time the
artist has no control over "best of" compilations, and as in the case of
Whiteheart, frankly I am embarrassed every time another such project
comes out. We recorded three albums with Home Sweet Home Records. Since
that time they have put out four "Best Of" albums plus a "live mono
album" (if you could call it that) with the only difference being a
different song sequence and different album cover artwork. We recorded
three more albums with Sparrow Records, and I felt they had good
sensitivity and integrity as they waited a year and put out one "Best
Of" album compiled from those three albums. We recorded an additional
three albums for Star Song Communications. When we left Star Song in
1994, together with them we put together a rockumentary "Best Of"
project called, Nothing But the Best--Radio & Rock, a two CD collection
that had four additional new songs and showcased our best songs from
1986-1994. This was the very first time we were involved with a "Best
Of," and I was excited because I felt our listeners and fans would
finally receive a Whiteheart "Best Of" that was a true representation of
what God had taken us through during those years. But again to my
dismay--only 10 months after Nothing but the Best, Star Song put out
another "Best Of" called Attack!! ,with an exact duplication of 10 of
the same songs from Nothing But the Best. Now, I know it's hard to
believe , but only six months after Attack!!, Star Song has released yet
another compilation album called Whiteheart, The Early Years. Again
eight out of the 10 songs are the same as on the Nothing But the Best
compilation. I know we might be somewhat popular, but I wonder if even
The Beatles have as many compilations as we do! All this to say, I
personally don't support this kind of action. It feels exploitive, but
there isn't anything that the artist can do in this situation except to
let the record company know our feelings on the matter (which is what we
did). The next step is to trust and pray that artists, managers, booking
agents, sales representatives and record companies would continue the
chain with Godly principles and honor as it deals with business
practices so that you, the consumer, aren't being taken advantage of.
For the most part, I believe this happens in our industry, but sometimes
it doesn't. Thank you for your time and attention concerning this
important area of music.

We are in the middle of doing some PR bookstore visits around
the US. I'm on a flight from San Jose to Chicago as I type. Mark,
Billy & I sing 2 or three songs from the new album and 1 or 2
old ones with just an acoustic guitar. We also talk about the
making of the album and have a question and answer time. It's
simple and intimate. Afterward while we sign autographs they play
the new album.

I asked Rick about this latest project. "There are lot more keyboards on this CD," Rick said. Rick also described Barry (on guitar) as a real "parts" player, and not so much a "solo" player. He said that Barry does an excellent job complimenting the music with his guitar work, rather than there always being the "obligatory" guitar solo. Another difference is the singing. Rick said, "There is no high singing or screaming on this album." The overall feel making this record was a lot more relaxing, as there was no pressure or rush to meet a deadline or run off to a supporting tour. Which brings us to the next question. I asked if there were plans to tour at all and he said, it kinda depends on the response to this CD. If the support is there, then they'll do some dates. Of course, any news will be posted here. Stay tuned...
Let me be clear. Whiteheart is still in a tough transition period, and they do covet your prayers concerning their future. God's will be done.
Here's an update from Billy Smiley on how he's keeping busy.
Danl - just wanted to let you know a couple of things going on with me
during this time - you might have remebered i did a flugelhorn project
about 8 years ago on the Sparrow label _ Meadowlark - which at that time
was sort of like christian 'new age' label - well i have recently signed
a 3 album production deal with Brentwood Records to produce 3 new
flugelhorn instrumental albums slated to be released starting around may
of 1997. The trilogy will be called - "Journeys" - with the first two
featuring well known hymns of "prayer" and "worship" that have been an
influence on my life. The third album will be a christmas album slated
for November of 1997. It has been a rewarding experience to 'shake off
the dust' of some of these old songs and interpret them in a new and
fresh way. Also - some people have asked - we are preparing for Cheryl
Jewell to go into the studio in February to begin on her new solo
project - i will let you know what label as soon as some things are
finalized. And am still fine tuning the "rock opera" will let you know
about that in a month or so - Thanks!!! billy

We would like to thank those of you who have been faithful Whiteheart
Alliance members. The encouragement we receive from you continues to be
invaluable. God's word asks us to "...pursue peace and the building up of
one another." You are fulfilling His word with your efforts. We would,
however, like you to know that we will not be taking on new memberships or
renewing old ones at this time. This fall we will be off the road to give
us all an opportunity to individually and corporately renew our focus. We
will not be able to give the time to maintain that relationship. We will
periodically send out e-mail updates to anyone who would send us their
e-mail address. Please pray that this time will give us the privilege of
growing closer to our God and the occasion to quietly seek the future He
would have for us.

Subject: Salt Box Review rebuttal
Dear CCM,
In response to the Salt Box Tour review by Dan MacIntosh in the July
'96 CCM Magazine, I would just like to say (in love), this guy has
absolutely no business writing about Whiteheart. When he says they use
"oftentimes stale and unimaginative guitar solos and dated-sounding
keyboard parts to propel its songs", it's obvious to me that he 1)
isn't listening, or 2) just doesn't like Whiteheart. I personally saw
the Salt Box Tour and thought Whiteheart sounded better than they had
in years. Bryan Wooten's guitar solos are anything *but*
unimaginative, and Mark Gersmehl's keyboards are nothing short of
inspiring. As for the reference to Whiteheart as being "an outfit with
one foot in the present, but with the other foot still firmly planted
in its glory days of the '80s", I can only say AMEN! and they do a
better job than most, of keeping their older music alive and fresh,
while continuing to move into the future with new sounds and vital
ministry. I move that Dan MacIntosh's remarks be stricken from the
record on the grounds that they are biased and unfounded. Is there a
second?
This person obviously is speaking out of ignorance. Whiteheart has
definitely stood the test of time! Their music has blessed thousands
of people. One of the most unique things about their concerts is
that they not only do stuff off of their most recent album, but they
do songs from practically each of their albums in the past. They
really don't concentrate too much on one album. The best part of
their concerts are when Mark Gersmehl speaks. What a man of God!
"This tour features another group which has probably logged about as many
miles as Petra. But unlike its generational sibling, Whiteheart's repertoire
doesn't seem to have stood the test of time as well. By relying on oftentimes
stale and unimaginative guitar solos and dated-sounding keyboard parts to
propel its songs, Whiteheart came off as an outfit with one foot in the
present, but with the other foot still firmly planted in its glory days of
the '80s. While some of the band's better known songs, like 'His Heart Was
Always In It,' and 'The Kingdom Come' gave off a warm ring of familiarity,
these exceptions were just not reassuring enough to prove Whiteheart is
marching boldly into the future. It's much too early for such a talented band
to start capitalizing on any '80s nostalgia frenzy."
